The Importance of Moisturizing Coily-Textured Hair for Cutting …

I’d like to give a Shout Out and a Big THANK YOU to my good friend and fellow educator, Tay… (Tamar Slaughter).

Tay is an Internationally Renowned Hairstylist and Educator. Her work has been seen on TV, Film, Fashion Shows & many Live Events. Tay has also traveled extensively throughout the country for some of our industries most well-known companies Teaching Hairdressers at major Beauty and Trades Events… which is how we met.

As Tay was going through my new Haircutting Course at: VelascoHaircuttingSystem.com, she reached out to me about the fact that I neglected to mention the importance of keeping the hair Moisturized while Cutting the Coily Hair Textures…and she was 100% Correct!

Even though I had used a moisturizing lotion to do the Coily haircuts for the program, it never

dawned on me that I should mention that in the videos… Duh…

So, Tay graciously offered to lend her expertise to this topic and has allowed me to enter it into the program’s curriculum in the Coily-Textured Hair Section of the course.

Below is Tay’s contribution to my Haircutting Course which I’m greatly appreciative for…

Hi, my name is Tamar Slaughter. I am a licensed cosmetologist with more than 20 years of experience delivering flawless hair artistry and professional education to stylists across the country.

I’ve had the privilege of learning from and working alongside David for many of those years, so I know how eager you must be to put his incredible haircutting techniques into practice.

Before you pick up your shears, though, David asked me to highlight one essential foundation for success: maintaining proper moisture balance when cutting wavy and curly hair in its natural state.

Moisture is vital because it preserves the curl pattern, reduces frizz, and allows for more precise sectioning. Unlike straighter textures, where moisture easily glides from scalp to ends, curls and waves often trap moisture closer to the scalp and mid-shaft.

This can leave ends dry and uneven, resulting in imprecise shapes once the hair dries. To prevent this, it’s important to pair water with a product that penetrates the hair shaft and helps lock in hydration long enough to maintain even saturation throughout the cut.

The first step is to pre-treat the hair with a moisture-balancing shampoo and conditioner. Once the hair is prepped, choose one of the following options to ensure consistent hydration during the haircutting service:

  1. Use a manufacturer-made cutting lotion.
  2. Create your own cutting lotion by mixing one part moisturizing conditioner with two parts water.

This simple yet powerful step ensures hydrated curls clump together, making it easier to see the true shape and density of the hair. It also minimizes breakage, keeps strands pliable, and allows you to sculpt curls with precision—while honoring the hair’s integrity and natural beauty.

With this foundation in place, you’re ready to dive back into the Velasco Cutting System and explore the artistry of his haircutting techniques with confidence and creativity!

Happy Cutting ,
