My First Time

In 1976, at the young age of 20, for the first time in my life, I was given the opportunity to teach Haircutting at a major International Hairdressing Event… (You thought I was going to say something else didn’t you :)

I was very fortunate in that I first met my “Haircutting Mentors”, John and Suzanne Chadwick before I was even a hairdresser. My older brother Danny was already a member of their education team and so I met the Chadwick’s while I was on a summer vacation to visit my brother in NYC at the age of 16. It was after this trip that I decided to become a hairdresser.

Fast-Forward 4 years later, and after learning and mastering the Chadwick’s Haircutting and Styling Techniques, they invited me to join them on stage at the 1976 International Beauty Show in New York City. At the time, this was one of the largest beauty events in the world…and I was beaming!

Over the course of the three show-days, we did about eight 2-hour presentations in front of several thousand hairdressers from all over the country (world).

The room that was assigned to us at the International Beauty Show in the Colosseum in NYC was too small for our needs so we actually took our presentation down the block to the Essex Hotel on Central Park South.

At the Essex Hotel, our room was very long and narrow and the stage was meant to be erected at one end of it, which meant that the attendees sitting way in the back of the room wouldn’t see very much of our presentation.

So, we change the design of the staging and made a low, running platform right down the center of the entire room. And for audience seating, we had erected industrial scaffolding around the room like painters use, and made it 2-tiers high. So, it was sort of like “staging in the round”, only it was rectangular so everyone was up-close and personal.

Then we embedded close-circuit television sets into the scaffolding around the room so that no matter where you sat in the room you can see what the designers were doing at the other end of the room as well.

This was the event that ignited my passion for Teaching Haircutting and the beginning of a long, professional relationship with the Chadwick’s, which eventually lead to me becoming an Artistic Director for the team…

If you’re looking for a Haircutting Mentor to ignite this passion for yourself, I would be honored to be able to do that for you.… Everyone needs a Mentor, whether you are new to the hairdressing industry or you’re a season professional, it doesn’t matter…. We all need guidance, advice, and a clear path forward to achieve our goals and to build confidence in this wonderful Art Form that we call Haircutting…
