David, Can You Tell Us Why You Created This Haircutting System?
Jan 12, 2026I was recently interviewed by the Artist, Icons and Entrepreneurs Podcast which took a Deep-Dive into my 50-Year Career as a Hairdresser and Hairdressing Instructor and one of the questions in the interview was “David, can you tell us why you came up with this New Haircutting System and why you think it’s so important today?”
And here’s what I said:
A few years ago, my daughter decided that she wanted to become a hairdresser. At the time she was living in Clearwater Florida, so I searched around and found the best Cosmetology School in the area to send her to. The tuition was $20,000 and after about a year and a half she graduated with honors.
Shortly thereafter, I asked her to give me a haircut. She looked at me and said: “Dad, I don’t know how to cut hair“… I thought for a second and I said, after a year and a half in Cosmetology School, and $20,000 in tuition fees you can’t even give me a slight trim?.
And she sheepishly said “No, I didn’t learn how to cut hair at all in Cosmetology School“…
So that led me down a rabbit hole of trying to discover what exactly “did” she learn in Cosmetology School. As a result, I ended up buying the Milady Standard Cosmetology Textbook, which is the textbook that most Cosmetology Schools in the United States use, and the one that they used at the school she went to.
This textbook is a large format (8 ½ x 11) size book with 1,129 Pages, it has 32 Chapters and Weighs about 7 Pounds.… And, would you like to guess how many of those 1,129 Pages are devoted to Haircutting Techniques? Just 19…
Yes, out of 1,129 Pages only 19 of them are devoted to Haircutting and you know what else… NONE of those pages teach you how to do a haircut….They talk about haircutting, they show you pictures of haircuts, and they describe haircuts for you… But on those 19 Pages there’s mostly large photographs and very little text and nowhere those 19 Pages does it teach you how to do even one single haircut… Not even a Bob!!!
Every year Thousands of young people are coming out of Cosmetology School all over the country not knowing a single thing about Haircutting…(Haircolor neither but that’s another story)….
For the most part, these young people just starting out in life can’t afford to go to New York City or London and take a high-end haircutting course by some big-name, Hairdressing Guru. So, they resort to the easiest and cheapest way to try to learn haircutting, which is typically YouTube videos.
These YouTube videos I’ve written about before, are fun to watch and good for inspiration and entertainment but in my opinion, they are not real education.
These hairdressers are sometimes “binge-watching” hundreds of haircutting videos that have NO relationship to one-another and only confuse them further as opposed to helping them understand how to actually cut hair.
Also, there are many, many hairdressers who have been working in the industry for any number of years who never really felt confident in their haircutting skills and are now taking my Haircutting Course because they knew in their heart of hearts that they never had this valuable training in the early years of their career and have now decided the time has come to really get a secure foundation in their Haircutting Skills.
So, after realizing this situation, I’ve decided to create my Haircutting Course for people like this…who really want to learn how to cut hair and don’t mind paying a reasonable tuition fee to learn this skill set that will feed them for the rest of their life.
I’ve taken this short segment of the Podcast in which I discussed my Haircutting System in great detail and posted it here on my Website Blog.
So, if you are a Cosmetology Student, Barbering Student, or just simply a Hairdresser who has been doing hair for any number of years but never really felt confident in your Haircutting Skills, I urge you to watch this short segment of the Podcast and let me know if you have any questions afterwards.
