A Study on Asymmetrical Haircuts

An Asymmetric Haircut is a hairstyle in which one side of the hair is intentionally cut differently from the other side — Typically, this means that one side is cut shorter than the opposite side.

Most of the time an Asymmetric Haircut is basically a One Length Bob type of design, but it could also be a layered haircut such as a Layered Bob with one side longer than the other.

In my Haircutting Course at VelascoHaircuttingSystem.com, I talk a lot about their only being three categories of haircuts: One Length Haircuts, Layered Haircuts and Graduate Haircuts… But I also acknowledge the fact that there can be “Combination Haircuts“ whereby either two or all three of these haircutting categories can all appear on the same head….As is the case with a Layered Bob with a Graduated Nape Area. In this situation the hair is cut into a Bob and then layers are cut into it and the nape area is Graduated.

Asymmetrical Haircuts fall into this category of combination haircuts and are one of the “Trickier” haircuts to cut properly because of the blending area in the back…

I see many poorly executed Asymmetrical Haircuts on the streets these days where by one side is simply whacked off short and the opposite side is extremely long and the blending area in the back is simply all chopped out. But to me a good Asymmetrical Haircut has a “Smooth Transition” from the short side to the long side and it’s this transition area that can be “Tricky“.

In the 11th Haircut in the One-Length Haircutting Module in my haircutting course, I’ll teach you how to cut an Asymmetrical Haircut whereby the back has a beautiful, smooth and natural looking transition from the short side to the longer side by using a technique I call “Vertical Graduation“.

Vertical Graduation is one of several different Graduating Techniques that I teach in my course, but it’s the main one that you would want to use to create a beautiful Asymmetrical Haircut.

Below is a video clip of a rotating mannequin head that I cut in my Haircutting Course so you can see exactly what I’m talking about when I say “Smooth Transition” in the back of the head. Also next to it is the “Design Elements Blue Print” included in my course to highlight the designing elements that create this hairstyle….

Notice how the Weight-line on the left side differs from the Weight-line on the right side and the Angled Weight-line at the back. Also take note of the arrows at the nape of the neck, indicating the sections taken for the Vertical Graduation Technique.

Also, I want to point out that as you’re cutting the nape area using Vertical Graduation, it’s important to keep in mind that each section you take will have a completely different “Holding Angle” based on the degree of the Angled Weight-line, gradually going from short to long just below the occipital bone.

By the way, I have created 56 of these “Design Element Blueprints“, one for each  of the 56 Haircuts that I teach (Step-By-Step) in my haircutting course. These Design Elements Blueprints are infographics that will remind you of the main elements that create each haircut in the course at a glance. I have been told by students taking the course that these Blueprints alone are worth the tuition fee for the course.

All of these fine points cumulate in the creation of an Outstanding, Super Professional looking Asymmetrical Haircut…and it’s just ONE of the 56 Haircuts that I teach in my Haircutting Course.
